2020 marks a new decade for NBR!!
I actually started my first-ever brand way back in 2011. This was when the very first Natural Beaded Rows™ class was taught by yours truly in Salt Lake City, Utah. At this point, I had already been doing hair and specializing in hair extensions for almost a decade!!
Soon after I taught my first class, I launched what I called “Shadowing”.
I created this new thing called “Shadowing” because my brand had not yet grown to the size it currently is now, and I honestly had NO IDEA how to fill classes each month. So, every month, I would take on about three new students for my shadowing. At this specific point in time, my husband and I decided to move our family from Salt Lake City, Utah, all the way to Gilbert, Arizona. I would fly back to Salt Lake every six weeks to accommodate past clients as well as bring in a little income and get photos for marketing. While all of this was going on, I also had a baby that was seven months old!! After doing all of this at the same time for a year, I was absolutely BURNT OUT and wanted to quit.
One night, after a 10 hour day at the salon, feeling exhausted and depleted, and feeling like I was emotionally drowning – I wanted to give up.
But it wasn’t like this just happened overnight.
The feelings of wanting to give up came from an entire year’s worth of stress that had quietly been compounding every day until it finally got to the point where it was simply too much for me to carry. And let me tell you – when you get to a place of “Complete Meltdown” mode – you literally just want to burn everything to the ground.
And so there I was, just sitting in my room, crying with so many mixed emotions…
Number one? I miss my babies.
And number two? I knew deep down, that what I was doing truly was making a difference in peoples lives. I knew I was giving them a tool that could hep them create success in their own lives.
As I sat there, literally on the floor in tears, I felt a strong sense of comfort come over me. I heard a voice say,
“You have no idea the impact you are capable of making. You would be selfish to quit.”
I couldn’t deny it. I heard the voice, loud and clear.
And in this moment, I KNEW I had to make some changes.
I knew couldn’t just throw away what I had spent SO MUCH TIME building, and simply let it all burn to the ground…
So, I decided right then and there, that I had to start doing things differently in a way that was COMPLETELY brand new, but take it one step at a time…
The first step?
I started with a new rule of no more traveling.
My very next choice right after was that I was no longer going to be working on Saturdays. And, just so you know, to even THINK about choosing to rid my hands of the Saturday hustle is VERY taboo in my industry, as we are always expected to work nights, weekends, soccer games, birthday parties, holidays, you name it. We worked pretty much the same hours as a CVS… 🤷🏼♀️ 😆
But really, though, the only one who was really to blame for continually choosing to stick with this unrealistic schedule was myself.
Plain and simple.
I had allowed myself to create the arrangements that I was currently in at the time, and I I had allowed myself to continually operate with stress levels that I knew were not healthy or sustainable, whatsoever.
An so, as I began making these changes, I started to become obsessed with marketing. Combine this new obsession of marketing with the two decisions I had just made of choosing not to travel anymore and choosing to no longer work on Saturdays, and I was bound to spark some incredible ideas.
And so, one day, out of nowhere, one of those incredible, yet simple ideas came to me in the form of a question:
“How can I create a brand where people want to travel to ME? How can I create a brand where I was no longer expected to work Saturdays, weekends and holidays?”
With this new idea now taking root inside my mind, it was now clear me that I had to set my standard HIGHER for how my work looked. Sure, I felt like I was a good artist, but I knew I had to become the Best.
I knew I had to become the Expert.
And I also knew that I would have to be able to showcase all of this through new, consistent and effective Marketing.
So, at this point, I knew what needed to be done. But was time to learn how I was going to do it.
Over the years, I went from doing Shadowing, and then I moved to teaching small classes, 10 students per class. But, again, I knew that the students I had been teaching needed more than just “another hair-extension technique”.
The pain that I had gone through as a hairstylist required me to change my story if I had any hopes of achieving the kind of success I now experience today.
This was when, about four years ago, we introduced: BMS.
You may have heard of it as Big Money Stylist™, but what it also stands to represent are the areas of Business, Marketing and Sales in the world of Natural Beaded Rows™.
In our own lives, I think we all have a tendency to abide by the rules of old stories. So the first thing we have to do – if we want to experience different, better results – is to change those stories…right?
But it’s a LOT easier said than done.
Changing your story means replacing it with something new. Something more…effective.
But it’s not like you all of the sudden wake up one day and decide you’re a new human being.
Instead, if you want make a new set of rules – the kind that really stick, then you have to be willing to discipline yourself to tell this new story – EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. – until the old story finally disappears.
Remember, it’s okay to take it one day at a time.
There’s no need to overwhelm yourself by chasing perfection right out of the gate.
It’s about sustaining your implementation.
It’s about learning to have patience with not only the process, but also with yourself.
Good things take time.
You just have to learn to stay with it. You’ll get there.
I know you will.
Honestly, if you can just learn to change your story to a new, more powerful one, then pretty soon you will hardly even be able to recognize yourself in one year, two years, or even three years down the road!!
We started picking up momentum with BMS about four years ago, when, in 2016, our classes grew from 10 students at 1k per ticket, to 25 students at 5k per ticket. And then we began to hold conventions of 200 people at 1K per ticket and then to 300 students at 5K per ticket. (!!!) Of course it was amazing to be able to experience these kinds of turn-outs and results, but at the end of the day, it was easy for us to tell that the students still wanted more and honestly just needed more. It was no easy task to sum up what I learned in a decade and jam-pack all those lessons into a three-day class. So we made the decision to create a Mastermind, and we ended up closing down all classes for the entirety of 2019.
Remember in the beginning of my story, how I talked about that I was done with the traveling game? Well my next goal was to figure out how to build my business and the company I wanted without traveling once a month…
Well, fast-forward to where I am now, and through the power of constantly course-correcting, as well as learning to harness the power of Branding, Marketing and Sales…
*Drum roll, please*….
We are excited to announce that, as of last week, we were able to successfully launch the very first Nationwide NBR™ Classes with 5 of my top trainers!!! 🙌 🎉 🙌 🎉
This year in 2020 is the first year I have allowed other trainers to begin teaching Natural Beaded Rows™. My trainers have all been doing hair for 15+ years and NBR for 3-5 years, not to mention my training program they did last year to become trainers!! (What!!!) They’re simply amazing and I am so proud of each one of them.
Honestly, having been able to achieve this amazing result of going Nationwide just goes to show that, by simply choosing to change my story, I was able to build the brand and business I wanted, and I did it on my terms.
I still hustled hard, but in a different way…a more manageable way. One that, at the end of the day, left me with more time and more freedom with my children and family.
I would challenge all of you who are reading this to remember this one thing: change won’t happen overnight. But, if you decide to tell yourself a new, different, more effective story, you’ll be able to positively impact the lives of so many others in ways you won’t even believe are possible…but they are.
Don’t settle for less. Know your own value. Know your own worth. Choose to tell the story you WANT to tell, and choose to create the path you WANT to create!
I promise you it’s worth it, and the results will truly speak for themselves.

For all artists and hairstylists who may be reading this, here are the formulations that were used for both the Blonde and the Brunette:
Blonde Color Formula:
Blondor 20 vol. baby lights all over. Lowlights 7n Redken toned hair with 10 p colorance.
Hair used for bottom row: 2 pieces of 8n, 2 pieces of 10n (all low-lighted with 7n and a splash of 7g Redken shades) and toned with 10p colorance, one piece of 10n (low-lighted with same formula)
Brunette color formula using Isla Hand-Tied Hair™ by Natural Beaded Rows™
5wb, 3n, 8n, 8/6wb, 3n.
For her natural hair, she was a Natural level 2.
We used Davines Mask lightener w/ 25vol
Toned with shades 7gb+8n
**We also used shades to color the extensions.
The blonde was done by: @amandakstyling
The brunette was done by: @mot.garnishstudio
